What Should I Do First?

One of the first things I want you to know is this: you do not need to have all of the answers today or all at once.  After a death, it is common to feel overwhelmed, sad, worried, confused, or pressured by family members who want to know what is happening next. You may be asking yourself, "What do I do first?" or "Am I already behind?" Those feelings are normal.

The good news is that there are only a few things that typically need immediate attention. Many other decisions can wait until you have gathered information and understand your options.

Start by focusing on these first steps:

• Locate any trust, will, or estate planning documents if they exist.
• Secure the home and gather important paperwork.
• Identify whether there is a mortgage, reverse mortgage, HOA fees, taxes, insurance, or other bills that need attention.
• Determine who may have authority to make decisions.
• Seek information and professional guidance so you understand what needs immediate attention and what can wait.

Remember, your first job is not to figure everything out. Your first job is to gather information and begin understanding the process one step at a time.
